The Perrin Technique

In Hobart Matt now offers the Perrin Technique a gentle specific  Osteopathic approach developed for treating people living with Chronic Fatigue or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Fibromyalgia and Long Covid.

What is the Perrin Technique?

The Perrin Technique is a is a manual therapy approach that was developed by Dr. Raymond Perrin a British osteopath and neuroscientist who hypothesized that dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system and  impaired lymphatic drainage,  were linked with CFS/ME and fibromyalgia.
It is a gentle  approach that aims to help the body’s own processes to clear inflammation and toxins from the brain and CNS through improving the movement of lymph and and cerebrospinal fluids.

What  are the causes of Chronic Fatigue ?

According to the model proposed by Dr. Perrin chronic fatigue/ME, fibromyalgia and long covid are likely linked to:
  • Dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system and in particular overload of the sympathetic nervous system.
  • Poor functioning of the body's lymphatic system and fluid stagnation.
  • A build up of inflammatory mediators and toxins in the fluid around the brain and
  • spinal cord.
  • Tension, stiffness and disturbed posture in the spine and rib cage.

What processes  are used  and how do they help?

  • Gentle articulation of the spine and ribcage using osteopathic techniques.
  • Manual techniques to improve lymphatic drainage of the neck, chest and back.
  • Lymphatic and osteopathic cranial techniques to help the body drain inflammation from the brain
  • and spinal cord to assist the sympathetic nervous system to function better.
  • Daily at-home gentle spine mobilization exercises and self-massage routines.
  • Advise on pacing, need for rest and relaxation and lifestyle changes.

Frequently asked questions:

Please allow one hour for your first appointment.

Your initial consultation includes a full case history and physical examination. This includes examination of posture, spinal mechanics, rib cage and breathing and palpation of areas where lymphatic flow occurs such as the thoracic inlet, abdomen, head and neck.

Following that an assessment for specific visual signs and physical characteristics commonly found in people with CFS/ME will be performed.

We will discuss your proposed treatment plan, expected prognosis, lifestyle changes that may be of benefit, and gentle exercises suited to your condition.

In most cases, treatment is not carried out during the first session due to the time required for assessment and consideration of your energy levels. This may vary depending on individual circumstances.

Questioning as to your symptoms and progress as well as a shorter osteopathic re-assessment and physical examination.

Gentle manual and soft tissue techniques to the spine, chest, neck and head to encourage better lymphatic and venous drainage and reduce congestion from the head and chest.

Cranial osteopathy to reduce restrictions in the head and neck, relax the nervous and assist Cerebrospinal Fluid to drain metabolic waste from the brain into the cervical lymph nodes.

Follow up sessions include instruction in self-massage techniques to perform at home, along with gentle exercises to help mobilize the spine.

The number of sessions varies depending on your symptoms, their severity, and how long you have been experiencing them.

Your initial assessment provides a diagnosis of CFS/ME and establishes a scale of symptom severity. This helps guide expectations regarding the likely duration of treatment.

People with milder or less chronic symptoms may see improvement within a few months. More severe or longstanding cases may require treatment over a longer period.

Many patients benefit from regular appointments combined with consistent self massage and prescribed exercises at home.

Weekly treatment is generally recommended for the first twelve weeks. As symptoms begin to improve, the frequency of appointments can usually be reduced.

Please phone Matt on 0481 089 661 to ask questions or to discuss whether Perrin treatment is suitable for you.

Some patients experience minimal side effects and notice improvement soon after beginning treatment. However, it is common for symptoms to temporarily worsen in the early stages.

This may include increased fatigue, pain, headaches, nausea, and occasionally skin eruptions such as spots or boils.

The first few weeks can be the most challenging.

Treatment is always patient centred. Your osteopath will work gently and adjust techniques according to your comfort level and individual needs at all times.
